Question : My daughter is 7 years old, having pain in her stomach, cannot pinpoint exactly where, she is not really talking much, though does make eye contact, she feels nausea, but does not vomit at all. She does not want to eat or drink some days. This has been going on all last school week for five days, then the weekend seemed better. She played outside then, seemed to eat normal. Sunday evening again, pain starts again. Last week I thought it was a virus, this week anxiety? She had a wetting accident at school, was very upset, but went back to class, then school the next day. By the third day after the "accident" the above symptoms ensued. She also had an ear infection, on an antibiotic for 10 days and the infection cleared up. So she has been sick much of the time since her wetting accident on Dec. 15th, plus vacation, she has not returned to school since. (Just one day) She definitely still has stomach pain and nausea. Now I was looking at appendix. Complicated. Thank you. Cher Lutz

Hi... I have just read through your question. Whatever you are describing is called Chronic Pain Abdomen in medical terms.

The differential diagnosis of abdominal pain in children varies with age, gender, genetic predisposition, nutritional exposure and many environmental factors. The causes are many including - constipation / acid peptic disorders / inflammatory bowel disorders / irritable bowel syndrome / worm infestation etc.

You have given me some very important points in your elaboration -

1. Starting of these symptoms only after the accident.

2. Absence of these symptoms during the weekend when there is no school.

3. Absence of dangerous or Red flag signs like joint pains or joint swelling or blood in the motion and urine and green of bilious vomiting.

Keeping all these things in mind I think that there is nothing serious going on. I personally feel that she might be finding this as a ruse to avoid School as the accident might have embarassed her.

I suggest you discuss this with your Pediatrician and then if needed take the help of a counselor.
