Suggest Treatment For Severe Neck And Shoulder Pain

default
Posted on Fri, 30 Dec 2016
Question: I have a painful muscle problem over my shoulder
next to my neck on my left side.
I've had this ongoing pain for the last 3 months.
It only hurts when I twist my neck.
I've been weight-lifting for the last 30 years.
Could I have pulled a muscle or tendon (ligament) while training ?

Brief Answer:
It is very likely to be due to muscular strain

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.

I carefully read your question and understand your concern.

Shouder and neck pain have several causes but the most common of all is muscular strain.

By what you explain, this is a pain that is worse on certain movements and this is typical of muscular pain. When we do a movement that activates the "hurting" muscle might cause us to feel pain.
Muscular pains might go on for several weeks and if we continue to hurt the muscle it might take even longer to heal and might go on for months.

Exercises and weight lifting sometimes might prodispose for muscular strains.
I would recommend you to speak with a physiotherapist to check you and identify the hurting muscle and give you the exercises that will help relax the muscle and strengthen it also.

To help with pain and muscle relaxation can also be used paracetamol and ibuprofen regularly but after food to protect your stomach.
Local warm compresses and soft massage on the tender area might help with the pain also.

If the pain is not better with the above measures you will need to see a doctor and have a more thorough examination.

I hope this is helpful to you and answers to your question

Kind Regards,
