Question: I had sever neck pain and stiffness with headache for several days, followed by nausea, diarrhead,
chills, fever, fatigue for several days --losing 8 pounds in 48 hours-What is the likely diagnosis

Dear Friend.
Welcome to HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
Following are possibilities based on your history:
1. Malaria
2. Meningitis.
3. Sub Arachnoid Haemorrage.
At your age that is extreme of age I don't advise to take this lightly.
You need to get investigated.
I advise you following:
1. MRI brain.
2. Hemogram with ESR.
3. Malaria Antigen
4. Liver and Kidney function test.
5. Chest Xray.
You should not take OTC Pain killers. For fever you can take Paracetamol 500 mg every 6 hourly.
If you have any further query please ask me.

I seem to be better--Neck hardly still at all, headache mild or non existent,
nausea gone, fatigue much better, not sleepy--seem to have come around
This has been going on since Tues and started turning around Saturday
and better Sunday
What is your opinion now ??

Dear Friend.
Initially you said you have high grade fever with chills and neck stiffness so I gave you that opinion.
In case every thing almost has resolved. You can wait. You can simply take Paracetamol 500 mg 8 hourly.
If fever comes again or worsons get tested as advised.
