Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain And Numbness In The Toes

Posted on Thu, 3 Nov 2016
Question: Hello! I sprained my foot about five days ago. My toes are still numb and I'm having trouble moving them. My foot is swollen all the way across the top still. I have a boot I've been wearing and I am able to put a small amount of weight down when I'm wearing the boot, but I can't put any down without severe pain without the boot. Is this normal?

Brief Answer:
Can be due to a fracture.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The persistent pain and swelling with inability to bear weight on the foot is not normal. This is suggestive of a bone injury ion the area.
For diagnosis it is important to get an x-ray foot and a MRI scan of the area done. X-rays are very sensitive for picking up any fracture and MRI is one of the best tests for ruling out and identifying soft tissue injuries in the area of fall.
I recommend you to consult an Orthopedician for proper examination and required investigations.
Meanwhile -
1. Do a cold compress on the area of injury.
2. Avoid weight bearing on the foot.
3. Keep the foot elevated on two pillows while resting.
4. Get some mild pain killers prescribed from your doctor.

I hope this answers your query.

I went to the doctor when it happened and they took x rays. Could they have missed a fracture then? My foot was extremely swollen at the time.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to extensive soft tissue injury.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
A minor fracture can be missed on X-ray. But the swelling can be due to an extensive soft tissue injury which can be properly diagnosed on an MRI scan.
Hope my answer is helpful.
