Question : I'm having severe pain in the back (neck) area, and when I lift anything, the pain feels like a fire burning across my back (shoulders). Years ago I was told that I had two protruding discs. Could this be related?

Hello,

Yes, disc protrusion is totally related to neck pain.
This is caused by the fact that the protrusion presses the nerve and cause severe pain.
Some advice that I can give to you for relief is:
-continue using heat or cold compresses as you are already
-take over the counter pain killers like ibuprofen 400 mg three times a day
-rest as much as you can
-do stretching exercises
-If the pain continues other options of treatment can be steroid injections or surgery.
Of course you should discuss with your doctor about this treatment.
