Question : when i attempt to walk my legs want to move out to the side rather than straight ahead ---- the right leg more predominantly than the left -- starting in the hip joint.

This phenomenon can be seen with possible arthritis and deformity, with/without muscle weakness.

I suggest you get an Xray of the involved hip. You can use a walker or crutches during mobilisation.
