Brief Answer:
Gouty arthritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi there

Thanks for the query

I have read your query, seen the attached xrays and reports.

It appears that your father has arthritis of the knee joint. In this condition the water in the knee reduces and the bones rub each other and cause pain. The gap in the knee has reduced and not increased.

He also has high uric acid in the body which can cause more severe Gouty arthritis. He has been treated by his doctor with Uric acid lowering medicine.

I suggest he gets the Serum uric acid levels tested again. Also if there is any fluid collection in the knee joint, it can be sent for testing of Uric acid crystals.

He can get a steroid injection in the knee for now and this shall give relief for about 6 months. If there is no Uric avid crystals in the joint, he can get hyaluronic acid injection which will help to increase the normal water on the joint and improve quality.

He needs to continue Physiotherapy to strengthen the Quadriceps muscles.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Dr. Aashish Raghu
