Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain In The Left Knee

default
Posted on Wed, 19 Aug 2015
Question: I have left knee pain almost constant. I thought walking would help and I added about 1/8 of the 2-4 mi. walk with a slow run - the pain even after icing is constant. I have not had an injury. I can ride my bike with no pain. So not sure why... so I had an MRI. Here are the Radiologist's Impressions:
1. Medical meniscus tear - posterior horn and body.
2. Sprain of MCL.
3. Degenerative change - medial femorotibial and patellofemoral articulartions.
4. Small joint effusion.
5. Multiloculated popliteal cyst extending superiorly.
Ortho Surgeon says all can be fixed with orthoscopic knee surgery - is that true?
I was hoping a corticosteroid shot would be enough.
Not sure what to do?
Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Steroid shot will not help in tear healing.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The medial meniscus tear that has been detected -the treatment depends on the depth of the tear. If it is a partial thickness tear then rest and using a brace can help in healing. But the healing will take 4-6 weeks. If it is a full thickness tear then surgical repair is the best way. The steroid shot can help in reducing the inflammation and the joint effusion but will not help in the tear healing.
If you want an early ambulation and resume your exercises early then it is best to go for a surgical repair.
I hope this answers your query.

I am have a DVT which I just found out that after 7 month post op and 7 months on Xarelto I am at still 40% clotted in my right leg (but down from 80% clotted).

Here's the big question I am going in for surgery on Wednesday August 5th 2015 (about 5 days). I know I will be taken off Xarelto for a few days and then continue post op. I've heard about these Sequential Compression Devices and I would like to use on both my left (new surgery) and right knee. What should I do? ARE THERE ANY OTHER WAYS OR BETTER WAYS TO HELP PREVENT RE-CLOTTING IN MY RIGHT NEW & ALSO PREVENT ANY CLOTTING AT ALL IN MY LEFT KNEE?

Please check the link for the compression device, or maybe you recommend something different?

Brief Answer:
It will help in preventing DVT.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The circulation leg wraps is a sequential compression device that will help in preventing the formation of clots as long as you are on bed rest. This is a nice and helpful product. You can use it after the surgery.
Hope my answer is helpful.
