For confirmation get an x ray of the tooth done..
As of now he can take painkillers like Ibuprofen for pain relief..

In that case he needs a course of antibiotics like Augmentin and Metronidazole along with anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen and Serratiopeptidases..
But as all these medications are prescription drugs, you should consult an Oral Physician or a local Physician and get prescribed..
