Question: I have just stopped taking Zapain for a shoulder problem which is a lot better now, I took up to 4 per day. I am getting hot flushes .i can't sleep, and have weakness in my legs. Is this likely to be withdrawal symptoms.I was taking them on and off for two years.

Brief Answer:
Yes, these are withdrawal symptoms. Taper off the drug!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

These are classic symptoms related to abrupt discontinuation after using codeine for long. You will need to start taking it back and regularly decrease the dose over time before stopping completely. Each time you would stop without tapering off, we may have this same difficulty. I will suggest you return to taking 2daily for one week, then 1daily for weeks, then 1 every other day for 2weeks and finally 1weekly for 2weeks before stopping fully. This will help reduce the onset and severity of withdrawal symptoms.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
