Question : My chest X-ray came be with a small shadow visible. I am a nonsmoker but have be coughing at night for a few months. I get a bad throat irritation that makes me cough. No recent colds. Could this be cancer. MY doctor is sending me to a pulmonolgist

Possibility of either infection or cancer is more.

I can understand your concern.
Lung shadow after the age of 50 years, irrespective of smoking habit, must be investigated for cancer.
Another possibility is lung infection.
So better to consult pulmonologist and get done
1. Clinical examination of respiratory system
2. CT thorax with Contrast
3. Bronchoscopy with XXXXXXX (bronchoalveolar lavage) analysis, if needed.
