Question : I was asleep. I was awakened with severe throat pain. I am sipping ice water to try to relieve it. I last ate about 3-4 hours ago (Oreo cookies). I keep spitting out my saliva because it hurts to swallow it. I have Barrett's Esophagus but usually have no trouble. I take lanzoprazole daily, in the late morning before breakfast. I usually sleep from around 3 or 4 until around 11 a.m. I am 77 yrs old and quite healthy. This is only the second time this has happened to me, the first time several weeks ago. I cannot access my email at the present time -- my pin isn't working. YYYY@YYYY Thank you.

More details are needed as following....

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxx,

I've just received your query and am sorry for the painful situation you are going through.

Let me go into your health problems with more details:
- 77 years old female
- Awakened with severe throat pain
- personal history of Barret's esophagitis; on lanzoprazole daily for that
- eating oreo cookies 3-4 hours before painful awakening
- second time repeated episode

Based on your description, my thought go for possible sore throat, most probably you might be sleeping with open mouth.

Apart the pain in throat, I need to know if you are also having:
- flu-like symptoms: pain? general weakness? sneezing? congested nose?
If yes, then, most probably, that is a cold sore throat.
- do you feel the lymph-nodes on the neck swollen?
Strep throat is also to consider.
- have you felt your throat sore during these days? or anything unusual?
- have you been exposed to unusual air dryness/conditions?
- as this is the second time, was the first diagnosis related to viral infection?

For the moment, I advise to continue with keeping in mouth ice cubes and oral lozenges.

Looking forward to have the requested information in.
