Suggest Treatment For Severe Upper Epigastric Pain, Fatigue And Nausea

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Jul 2015
Question: After many bowel surgeries/total colectomy/hx of Crohns, I was admitted to the hospital six days ago with severe upper epigastric pain that came on suddenly for a small bowel obstruction (adhesions--anterior left sided pelvis). I've had partial ones before that quickly resolved, but not like this one. The next day, it opened during a small bowel follow-through. Now home, what can I expect? I am experiencing fatigue, a bit of nausea and my appetite is off, along with intermittent abdominal crampiness and pain, bloating and low back pain. Am I being paranoid? Doctor said this could come back at any time. I am set to vacation in Mexico next week and don't want any surprises.

Brief answer...there is nothing which can prevent repetitive obstructions
Detailed answer...
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I have read your query and understand your problem very well.
The fact is you can't do anything for these adhesions.
If you try removing these adhesions by way of surgery, more will form.
Upto 93% people of going into abdominal surgery develop intestinal adhesions and this risk increases further in those people who have had earlier bowel surgeries,as in your case.
Most of the intestinal obstructions do not require treatment and surgery is spared for people who develop severe intestinal obstruction.
You can't prevent yourself going into intestinal obstruction.
Researchers have not found that eating or any particular diet or nutrition play any role in preventing adhesions or obstruction.
If you get symptom of adhesion you can treat it by taking liquid and low fibre diet but if your symptoms increase and problem doesn't settle, you have to go to hospital.
I know it is a perpetual problem for you but the fact is that you have to live with it.
Don't get tensed up and go and enjoy your vacation.
I hope it helps, however you are most welcome to revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
