Brief Answer:
Acute urinary retention requires a visit to ER.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for your query.

If you cannot pass urine all of sudden, that indicates a sudden obstruction to the flow, most likely in the prostatic part of the urethra, or at the bladder neck.

The reason for blockage could be a bladder stone, infection in the bladder, bleeding in the bladder, or sudden spasm of the prostate gland.

Please visit your nearest ER and get yourself examined, you will probably require a cystoscopy to find the exact cause.

The treatment depends on the exact cause for obstruction.

Please do write back to me if you have any doubts.

Wishing you speedy recovery.

Best regards
