Question : My sister has vertigo. She has had it for approximately 20 years. It started out maybe once a year or so but as she has gotten older it is to the point that she has it about once per week and can last weeks. She does the excercise and takes valium for it. She is spends weeks in bed and becomes very depressed. The doctors have told her nothing can be done for it. I find that at 60 you are living life like this is unacceptable. What is your opinion? We are desperate.

Hi
Welcome to HealthcareMagic and thanks for putting up the query
Age related cerebral changes can cause dizziness and imbalance. Vertigo can be central I.e. reason in brain or peripheral I.e. reason in ear.
Please tell me what investigations she has undergone.
Any cervical problem?
Any other health problems?
is there vertigo when she turns in bed while lying?
Any nausea Along with vertigo?
Valium is not appropriate drug for vertigo. She should be given specific anti vertigo drugs.
Before prescribing I want to know few details.
Please follow up with the required information so that I can suggest you better.
Take care
Thanks and regards

Yes as I said migraines, IBS, colitis, over active thyroid, arthritis, extreme nausea with the vertigo
Is there not something that can be done?
Yes she can be asleep and turn over and feel it start
Investigations- hearing, drip water in ear, do test that makes you feel like you are spinning, at one point was diagnosed with minears disease later told misdiagnosed, was put in a standing cylinder and it would rock

Hi
Thanks for all the information
Please start giving her tablet promethazine twice daily
Give her tablet betahistine 16 mg three times a day
Also give her tablet vitamin b12 1500 micrograms once daily
All the medicines I have prescribed will be available only on prescription.
Please taper down her valium. For her valium is probably prescribed as a sedative and anti anxiety.
Continue with the Medicines she is taking for other diseases.
You can try her to use vertigo exercises. An Android app by the name of VERTIGO is available. It can help to reduce the symptoms.
I hope my advise proves useful for you.
Take care
Any further questions are always welcome.
Thanks and regards
