Question: Hi doctor,
I am in preparation for my. Basic Mountaineering Course and for that I need to run at least 3 -4 km per day. As I started it a couple of months back it was ok. But I started feeling sharp pain in my both leg inside part of shin bone. If I press my tibia with fingers the pain originates from a particular part. I was afraid of stress fracture and visited hospital. Where X ray reveals no fracture. But I have vitamin D defficiency. Only 8. Doc prescribed one arachetol 6 lac per week for four weeks, proxym300 and pentid 800. Now its third week. I resumed running since last 7 days. Though do feel very mild pain but its much better now. What should be my next course of treatment? Should I continue running? Its only 2 months to go for the course.
Thanks and regards

Brief Answer:
Osteomalacia, Adamantinoma, Stress fracture

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I have read your query and understood your problem.

Pain in the shin bone can occur due to variety of problems like Vitamin D deficiency and related metabolic disorders, Stress fracture, Adamantinoma, bone cysts, infections etc.

Since your feet the pain after running, the bone is not able to withstand more than normal stress as the weight on the legs can be upto 4 to 6 times more than normal body weight on running. So, weak bones may not be able to take the stress. Weakness of bones can be caused due to any of the above mentioned conditions.

Since you have been diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency and ruled out stress fracture by Xray, you need to follow the regimen as prescribed by your Orthopaedic Doctor.

You need to take a diet rich in Vitamin D and Calcium like eggs, meat, oily fish, nuts, green leafy vegetables. This will prevent Calcium deficiency wick also occurs along with Vitamin D deficiency and can cause weak, soft bones. Keep well hydrated. Do regular exercise to increase stamina but within normal limits. Spend some time outdoors as sunlight will help to form Vitamin D in the body and prevent deficiency. Kindly do warm up exercises before you go for running.

You may get your Vitamin D and Calcium levels checked once again to check if the levels have returned to normal and also to rule out any other disorders.

I hope I have answered your query.

Thanking you.

Hi there.

Thanks for your flow up query.

The throat infection which you may be suffering from is possibly Pharyngitis, for which you're Doctor had prescribed the antibiotic.

Avoid pollution, consuming cold or hot food or fluids. Avoid smoking. Keep warm. Eat healthy.

If your Doctor has examined you and found no problem with your heart out no general sepsis, you can continue with your training moderately, but it is advisable to not exercise strenuously as during time of infection, the body needs to fight the objection and needs more energy. So it is better to rest to help tide over this problem. Kindly consult your Doctor and ask about any other risks associated with the infection which he has diagnosed you with.
