Brief Answer:
Sore throat is due to upper respiratory infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

I have read your query and will be answered by me.

Pain over right side of neck to shoulder is likely due to muscular origin for which over the counter pain killers (oral and topical gel or cream) will be helpful.

Sore throat with difficulty in swallowing are symptoms of upper respiratory infection.

Majority of cases of throat pain are due to viral infection, but in some cases it is related to bacterial infection (like streptococcal pharyngitis).

1) Continue to take pain killers preferably with anti-inflammatory combination (like paracetamol 500 + ibuprofen 400) drugs available over the counter.

2) Antihistamines like levocetrizine or benadryl twice daily if you have a dry cough or cold.

3) Nebulization with steam inhalation 2 to 3 times daily and warm salt water gargles which will also be helpful for symptomatic relief.

4) Take multivitamins like vitamin B complex with folic acid daily once.

5) Short course antibiotics (azithromycin 500 mg) can also be taken if there is underlying cause is bacterial but for that you will need to see some local doctor or GP who may prescribe it after ordering routine blood works and strep test.

I would expect that you will start improving within 3 or 4 days dosages but in case, if not then better to see ENT specialist for complete throat examination and further treatment.

Hope this will help you, feel free to ask if you have more questions.

Thanks and Regards,

Hello DR Kabra - thanks for reply, the pain got so bad in the night that I went to the out of hours clinic at the hosp - said I have twisted muscle in my neck area and prescribed anti-inflammatory pills and ibuprofen - really bad pain - muscle spasms. I am trying to rest as much as poss and using a hot water bottle - my neck still hurts on and off through the day but the pain is mainly under control now.

Brief Answer:
Continue with pain relievers.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the appreciation.

The neck pain is muscular origin which I suspected,so you should continue with pain killer medications, hot fomentation and complete rest to the neck muscles means avoid neck movements that causes pain.

It might take up to 5 to 7 days to get rid off this pain.

Let me know if you need anymore help from my side.

Regards,

Dr.Sandip kabra
