Question: Hi, my husband has a sharp pain on his foot which comes and goes. He had it once before and he it wakes him up at night since they are very sharp. He is not diabetic so I cannot understand why this happens. I am trying to see what I can do to relieve some of the sharpness and kind of dull it for him. He has taken aspirin for it but it really does not help. Why would he have this and it usually starts at night. It has been awhile since he has had them. Can you tell me what this pain is. He says its nerve pain.

Brief Answer:
different possible causes

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Your husband is right, it does sound like nerve pain or neuropathy.

Diabetes is only one of many causes for nerve pain/ neuropathy.

Some of the other causes are- (1) low levels of vitamin b12 and folate
(2) thyroid disease
(3)liver or kidney disease
(4)trauma eg arthritis of the spine can affect the nerves going to the lower limbs
(5)exposure to toxins
(6)abnormal levels of b6
(7)autoimmune disease eg lupus or RA
(8)MS or other neurological conditions

In some persons the cause is not found. In most persons, this type of pain is not due to a serious cause.

If it continues or worsens, then he should be seen.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
