Question : I am trying to decide what kind of doctor to take my daughter to. She has sharp shooting pains in her shin/calf area by her knee that began yesterday after she sat down on a piano bench. It seemed that something had "popped" in her knee but there is no pain in her knee. The pain in the muscles just under her knee have been severe and kept her from sleeping last night.
Is this something that will go away with rest and ice and time or do I need to take her in today?

Brief Answer:
an orthopedic doctor deals with bones, muscles

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

An orthopedic doctor is one who deals with problems or injuries to the bones/muscles but since there is no history of direct trauma you can consider waiting at least a few days unless the pain is very severe.

It is possible , if she sat suddenly or awkwardly, that there was some strain on the tendons or muscles in the area.
R.I.C.E therapy may help- rest, ice therapy to the area, compression with a bandage if there is any swelling

The use of anti inflammatory pain meds such as naproxen or ibuprofen may also help once she has no problem with using these medications.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
