Brief Answer:
May be a trapped nerve.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for using Healthcare Magic. From the information you have provided and in particular the shooting nature of the pain, your problem may be due to a trapped nerve. This may be causing muscle spasm as the pain has intensified.
I suggest you need to take paracetamol and ibuprofen. Continue with plenty of water. Hot or cold compresses may help. Try not to stay in one position for too long as this will cause further stiffening.
The cause of the problem needs to be confirmed and a scan of your back will help. Therefore, I suggest you need to see your doctor for an assessment as soon as possible.
Depending on the diagnosis, your doctor may suggest diazepam as this can relax the muscles in spasm. Amitriptyline is effective for many cases of backache. Nerve root injections or facet joint injections may be indicated dependant on the findings of investigations.
I hope this is of help. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Regards,
Dr K A Pottinger
