Suggest Treatment For Shortness Of Breath While Having Diabetes

Question: My 14 year old daughter is a type one diabetic (dx 2 years ago) and had a heart ablation in 2013 for WPW. She goes annually to the cardiologist to check that and has been fine. The past couple of months, she has had difficulty getting a breath; like shortness of breath. She has to keep trying to get a deep breath. It isn't horrible, but she hates that shes always trying to catch a deep breath. She plays competitive colleyball and is in really good shape. I put the symptoms into symptom checker and it brought up GSD type 2 (Pompe disease)--is this a possibility? Should I have her endo test for it? We have an appt in Feb

Brief Answer:
This is not really true. Do not test for it now!

Detailed Answer:
HI and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this difficulty catching her breath and all the disturbing information you must have had to deal with. Honestly, there is no reason to get worried with diagnosis which are in no way personalized. This is the problem I have with robotic online tools. patients are not standards and do not follow a fixed rule and this is why it always takes somehow to piece the pieces together for meaning interpretation and conclusions. Her symptoms are not suggestive of this. A girl who can complete at the highest level for her age will not turn to have difficulties berthing which are caused by such a disease condition. This is transient and may really be related to her self awareness of this. What are the reasons for which she really needs a conscious effort for deep breaths? All deep breaths must be conscious an of course am not surprised she is aware of them. I will also like that you go ahead and describe a typical breathing difficulty for review. In all, no need for any precipitated investigations or appointment at this time. I have not found reasons to agree to that just yet.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Above all, thanks for using our services.

Thank you! I just get nervous because of the other 2 conditions she has had to deal with. I have had difficulty catching my breath sometimes too so maybe she gets it from me. She doesn't complain often of it, but I just notice her trying to catch her breath quite often. I was thinking maybe asthma or some sort of allergy, but then I put it in WebMD and say the GSD condition which concerned me even more. Should I mention this to her endocrinologist in Feb since you don't think it's anything immediate that needs to be looked at?
Thank you very much for getting back to me

Brief Answer:
Bring it up for discussion with her endocrinologist during the appointment!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

There is no need for a separate appointment to address this at this time. I will suggest that you go ahead and stick to the appointment in February. Bring this up for discussion with her endocrinologist then but there is no need for a separate appointment to deal with this.

I wish you well and keep me updated.
