Question: I am worried about my breathing when i am sleeping. If i am too flat it feels like i cant breathe and then i panic and wake up. I have been told that i snore loudly too. I am asthmatic. Is it just my asthma playing up or is it something that requires investingation? I also have af and since being diagnosed with this the problem has worsened. I don't have any reports or images from the recent investigations.

Brief Answer:
Consideration

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending the question.

I understand that you are experiencing shortness of breath when you try to lay flat on your back. The fact that you have atrial fib is extremely important in relation to the symptoms which you are reporting.

Atrial fib is a condition which if not treated properly can lead to congestion of the heart. One of the symptoms of congestive heart failure or is shortness of breath when laying flat.

If you are not having coughing or significant wheezing then I think asthma is less likely to be the cause of your symptoms.

I am concerned that your atrial fib may need to be treated in order to help your heart pump more efficiently. This might help you to feel much more comfortable when laying flat.

I would recommend that you touch base with your doctor soon as possible to schedule a follow-up consultation, physical examination and determination of the best approach to help you feel better.

thank you again for sending your question.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
