Suggest Treatment For Side Effects Of Augmentin

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Mar 2017
Question: I have taken Augmentin orally for 4 days for bronchitis and my URI symptoms have diminished, but my gut is giving me moderate pain and nausea. I stopped taking the Augmentin with 6 days left on the RX due to the GI symptoms worsening. My cough has returned along with congestion and I am questioning whether IM injections would alleviate the GI problems and in tern help arrest the bronchitis?

Detailed Answer:
Hello Dr. XXXX,

I'm sorry to hear about the GI disturbances you are having with oral Augmentin. Unfortunately, the IM alternative, such as an intramuscular shot of Rocephin (which has the same bacterial coverage as Augmentin) can kill the beneficial gut bacteria too, so there is still risk of diarrhea. But if the problems you are having with the Augmentin are limited to your stomach (pain in the epigastric area only, nausea), IM Rocephin might bypass the problem of taking an oral medication.

I have had stomach pain with antibiotics such as Azithromycin and have been able to bypass this by crushing the medicine and mixing it with a cold bland food. You can try crushing the Augmentin and mix it in with apple sauce or pudding. You can use a mortar and pestle to do this.

You might want to consider, for a couple of days, to take Zantac 150 mg twice a day, to allow your stomach to feel better, too.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
