default
Posted on Mon, 3 Apr 2017
Question: I was treated in the ER on Monday night for an adverse reaction to Clindamycin. My symptoms include difficulty swallowing, dry mouth and throat, and acid reflux.

I was prescribed Protonix for the reflux. When should i expect to feel normal again??

Brief Answer:
Looks more like sore mucosa possibly pharyngitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Firstly thanks for posting query on this forum,

Sore throat, red itchy swollen tongue with mouth mucosa associated with apthous ulcers can be among one of the numerous allergic reactions to clindamycin.

However the picture look more like Pharyngitis or Upper respiratory tract infection.

Heartburn and gastritis is a side effect of clindamycibn,However if yourreflux is not fully relieved by Protonix,Iwould advice you to switch over to Nexium (Esomeprazole)40mg twice daily can be increased to 80mg twice daily.Antacids like Pepto bismol can also be taken for symptomatic relief.

However initailly i would suggest you a physical examination of Pharynx and Larynx,If things are not related to inflammation and are just allergic. You will be fine in a day or two.

Please specify in detail why were you on clindamycin and doses you were taking.

Waiting,
Regards

I was taking 300 mg 4/day for a tooth abscess. I got a root canal last Wed and have a temporary filling currently. I'm scheduled to get my crown on 3/30.

follow up answer.

Detailed Answer:
Hey again,
300mg clindamycin can cause gastritis,Thats's why usually probiotics and antacids are always given with an antibiotic.
If causing problem ask you dentist to shift you on Cefuroxime and add probiotic and antacid along with it.

Rest follow all things as adviced above.
Feel free to ask any query.

Any recommendations on how to sooth the throat? I keep reading about people drinking a mixture of apple cider vinegar, honey, and warm water.

I prefer to go the natural route vs filling yet another prescription... thanks!

Follow up for your answer.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
As you are asking only for natural products,

Cinnamon is a popular spice often used to flavor baked treats. Studies have proven that the spice has anti-inflammatory properties, which could help to ease swelling.
Cloves,Jamaican allspice.,Apple pie spice mixture.,Oregano and Sage. all these have natural anti inflammatory.
Drink XXXXXXX warm water with olive oil.
No dairy products, alcohol and caffeine
Keep on taking apple cider along with garlic.
No fast food.
NO meat for few days.
Boil vegetables and add pepper and take them.
No citrus fruits as they increase acidity.
Gargle twice with XXXXXXX warm water.

Thanks

I had another acid attack about 30 minutes ago, so I barely slept a wink... it's now 5:07am and I need to leave for work in 3 hrs. I'm at my wits end. Do you know how long these Clindamycin side effectstypically last? I stopped taking it last Saturday night.

Brief Answer:
Most likely its dyspepsia and is not rlated to clinda, stopped 6 days back.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
Fistly its not mandatory to take clindamycin only,If it is causing gastritis swich over to Cefuroxime (after consulting your dentist).
Side effect due to clindamycin should have settled down in a day or two.I think you are suffering from Dyspepsia right now. Most likely hstory of taking Clinda is just a co incidene.

Though not asked yet if you have to go to office today take-
Tab Nexium 80 mg stat followed by 40mg twice daily.
OTC pepto bismol can be taken to control vomiting.
Or else please tell me what medicines do you have right now in your first aid box.I can guide you with that.

Waiting.

I'm on Protonix since Tues. I only have Pepto for OTC med. Will the Nexium interact with Protonix?

Brief Answer:
Follow up answer.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Protonix is pantoprazole,Same group like Neksium.
Take 40mg Protonix stat and if not relieved 40mg more can be taken.Nexium is just a bit superior to Protonix in managing symptoms.
10-20ml of pepto bismol can be taken for nausea stat.

Once you reach office you can follow what i adviced,However a visit to gastroenterologist will be a good idea after emergency treatment.

Regards.
