Brief Answer:
You are supposed to have "vacation periods" from using the drug.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back to HCM: Please note that one will get calcium buildup onto the bones and with time ones bones due to remodeling are prone to breaks, fractures and pain, ironically despite the fact that Fosamax is used to build and strengthen bones, it thus recommended that one has a drug holiday. Other side effects like constipation can be treated by using laxatives and stool softeners, pill induced esophagitis is curbed by drinking the Fosamax with plenty of water and not just before sleeping, hypocalcaemia can be monitored by lab work at least every 3 months to begin with, also one may have low Vit D and these levels should be checked at regular office visits, osteonecrosis of the law is that people hear about a lot and this is especially evident after tooth extraction, again laying off the drug for a year can help prevent some of these side effects.
