Question : My father is having breathing issues that are thought to be physiology prone. he was issued a rx for lorazepam (atropine) and is having symptoms of blurred speech and heavy legs? Should he be careful with these drugs and take only as needed??

I appreciate your concern

Lorazepam can cause these side effects especially in the initial phase. However, it can be continued. Atropine is used in certain spastic conditions of the Gastrointestinal tract mainly but also helps in reducing secretions in the respiratory passages and helps in bronchodilation. If the respiratory episodes occur frequently then episodic drugs should be avoided and the medication should be continued in the lowest and convenient dose possible.
