default
Posted on Tue, 11 Nov 2014
Question: Hi, I burned the tip of my nose with hot water. It made 2 big red spots and the skin pealed this morning, but it is still very red. Can you suggest how to treat this to make it heal fast? I've been using an Aloe Vera product designed to cool and sooth minor skin irritations.

Brief Answer:
First degree burn ; Follow the suggestions.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir,

Welcome again and thanks for posting the picture.

The area is really red and its just 3 days since the incidence. This is a first degree burn and would not cause any scarring or other issue so do not worry about anything serious.

But as it is on face so you require a meticulous and proper treatment. If I were your treating dermatologist then would have suggested applying a cream containing Fluticasone or mometasone for two times a day. If these are not easily available then cortisone cream can be applied immediately as is available easily over the counter. I suggest to apply it in such a thin layer that it should be visible by naked eye. It sold be applied for 2 times a day.

Additionally I would have suggested to apply calamine lotion available over the counter. It can applied for 3-4 times and make a good layer so that it can soothe the burned skin as well as form a protective layer between the nose skin and the direct sunlight as well as environment.

In case of itching or burning I suggest my patients to take an antihistamine tablet by mouth such as loratadine (Claritin) or levocetrizine for itching and irritation under medical guidance. It can be taken for one time if itching is less or for two to three times if the irritation is more.

An anti-inflammatory tablet such as paracetamol or ibuprofen would reduce the pain and inflammation.

Despite above measures if the rings increase in next 48-72 hours then you can consult a dermatologist. But I am quite hopeful and confident that you would be quite alright soon.

One more important thing to guide you is that the area will get darkened on its healing so don’t be panicky for the same. Getting darkened in next 48 hours is a good sign of healing. This would get darkened for 7-10 days and then the dead skin will fall off in around 14 days.

Don’t try to peel off the skin or touch the area otherwise can cause pigmentation mark over the affected area.

Additionally protect yourself from direct sunlight as can cause pigmentation later.
I hope these information's will help you. If you have further queries I will be happy to help.

"Wish you good health"
