Suggest Treatment For Slight Fever, Sore Throat, Itchy Red Rashes All Over Torso

default
Posted on Fri, 27 Nov 2015
Question: My 7-year-old son has been sick with the flu for 3 days, and now he has an itchy red rash all over his torso, front and back. The tiny red bumps first appeared on his chin (and neck area) after he was complaining that it was hurting there. He did have a slight fever and a very sore throat the first 2 days of being sick, but hasn't had any meds for it so far (no Tylenol or Motrin). He has a dry cough now and low energy. What might this be, and how can I make him more comfortable?

Brief Answer:
Viral Exanthem--Needs conservative management!!!

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the consultation at my virtual clinic!
I have carefully worked through your case, and can well realize your health worries. Being your physician, I will take care all of your medical concerns today and will put my best efforts to get you out of this situation.

PROBABILITIES:-
It seems to be a viral infection and is typically named as " Viral Exanthem " and doesn't look like to be an allergic reaction.

Other possibilities may be Measles but I need further details before I can comment on that:
Can you see the redness of his eyes???
Does he has fever??? If yes, what's the reading on the thermometer??
Please spare some time and upload well lit and good resolution pictures of his eyes. I will review them and comment.

Other possibility and very serious is group A streptococcal infection:
If you rub your hands on his body rash areas, can you feel SandPaper Like appearance and feeling of the skin???? I will wait for this finding and we will proceed accordingly as this may be a cause of bacterial infection of the throat that can even lead to heart disease and we have to prevent that.

Management:-
Keep a Warm Mist Vaporizer in his room to sooth and ease his breathing.
Give steam inhalation.
Apply Pro-Cort topical on the rash areas for soothing feelings and fast recovery.
Lukewarm water shower before going to bed. No scented soaps. Use Oatmeal Milk and Honey body wash for shower.
Give him Tylenol and Claritin (avoid aspirin and Ibuprofen and cough suppressants as there will accumulation of respiratory mucous secretions in the respiratory tract and will cause difficult breathing and more sick feelings).
Give him plenty of fluids and keep an eye he doesn't get diarrhea vomiting or any other bodily symptoms.

Hope I answered all of your questions. Let me know if you have further clinical concerns or doubts. I will be more than happy to get back to you with expert opinion. My son had a low fever, malaise, and very sore throat for two days prior to the rash. He does not have a fever now or redness in his eyes. His rash does not feel like sandpaper. It is made up of many tiny red slightly raised bumps and covers his chin, neck, front and back torso, and maybe his lower legs now. It itches and burns. Also, he felt pain in his chin area before the rash developed and that area seems to burn the most. Calamine lotion seemed to help some. His armpits are also very rashy. We live in a small town and I was told at the drugstore that chicken pox is going around. Compared to pictures of chicken pox I looked at, his rash is made up of much smaller bumps, and many more of them.

No this isn't chicken pox. It is Viral Exanthema. Thanks for providing the details to rule out other causes.

It is a viral infection and is self limiting and will go away after a few days.

Gargles with any suitable mouthwash will be helpful.

Dr. XXXXXXX Hanif,
Thank you for clarifying to rule out chicken pox. Is his rash contagious? How long do I need to keep him home from school?
