Question: I am 20 years old and do not smoke or chew tobacco. I have two small hard bumps that are not painful in the lower jaw area next to my tongue below my molars. They have remained this size for a long time. What could be the cause of this?

Brief Answer:
Sub-mandibular sialolith or lymph nodes...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

The two small bumps noticed below the molars could be either lymph nodes or submandibular siaolith.

Lymph nodes are like policemen in the body which pops up when there is active infection in the surrounding region. Most of the times, the lymph nodes will recede in size once the infection clears. But, occasionally it will remain quiescent. Do not worry! These are literally harmless swellings.

Secondly, there can be formation of stones in the duct of the sub-mandibular salivary gland. This can remain in the oral cavity for a long time. Complete examination of the oral cavity can help in differentiating between both the swellings. If the swellings are in the sub-mandibular salivary duct and there are no symptoms because of their presence, nothing needs to be done further.

Consult your doctor for a complete examination of the oral cavity.
