Posted on Mon, 27 Oct 2014
Question: I have been experiencing diarrhea that smells like mildew although I still smell it with a normal bowel movement. I have had an enormous amount of intestinal problems since I was 13 ( I am 52 now ) I also have NF and was told it is the cause of the intestinal problems . I have had at least 20 procedures to remove scar tissue and also several feet of both large and smalliintestine .I have had a 21lb weight loss since XXXXXXX .Can you please tell me if I should be concerned or is it just a matter of my diet because I do eat alot of veggies. As you can imagine after all the trips to the OR I am reluctant to see my GI .

Brief Answer:
?? Suspecting a GIT condition

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I would first like some help from you in order to adequately help you further ma'am, I hope you do not mind:

-What exactly do you mean by intestinal problems ma'am?
-The scar tissue removed was from which region ma'am?

For the time being, I am of the opinion that the foul smelling stool is most certainly due to either a gastrointestinal abnormality or an infection, and not due to the diet. The weight loss is also in accordance with a gastrointestinal condition, which is why I would most certainly recommend a colonoscopy and a stool analysis to examine your intestines elaborately.

I have given you a short list of possible conditions based on the provided information ma'am:
-Irritable bowel syndrome (Ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease)
-Celiac diseases
-Lactose intolerance
-Gluten intolerance
-Yeast overgrowth
-Bacterial overgrowth
and a few others.

I can understand how you would be reluctant to visit your doctor, and if this is the case please do look for another doctor who better suits your needs and understands you better but please do seek medical attention as the most important part of your management has not yet occurred, and that is the diagnosis.

I look forward to hearing from you further ma'am. Please do not hesitate to write to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
