Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat And Acid Reflux

Posted on Wed, 15 Mar 2017
Question: Hello,

I have had a constant sore throat to be told by my ENT's that it's reflux, even though the 24 hr monitoring comes out negative. The sore throat is lower in my throat, almost like inflammation. My TSH has changed from being 3.7, to 1.2. I have hair and skin issues, and a nodule on my isthumus that was biopsied negative. Could thyroiditis be causing this constant inflammation feeling? Is there anything I could do from an endocrinologist point of view that I haven't done already?

Brief Answer:
Yes,Thyroiditis can cause neck pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I have gone through your query and understood your concern.

The most common cause of pain in the thyroid region or in the anterior neck is subacute thyroiditis.

Yes, inflammation of the thyroid or subacute thyroiditis can be tha cause of your sore throat but in this case you should have other symptoms like fever(37.8° to 38.3° C) and thyroid tenderness or enlargement.

Neck pain in subacute thyroiditis characteristically shifts from side to side and may settle in one area, frequently radiating to the jaw and ears and is aggravated by swallowing or turning of the head.(Do you have any of this pain characteristics???)
These clinical elemements and the thyroid function test are important for the diagnosis.

You have normal TSH values, and in subacute thyroiditis it is common initially hyperthyroidism sometimes followed by a transient period of hypothyroidism.

To resume, your thyroid test results are within the normal range and If you have not other thyroid-related symtoms .
So,You have not the typical clinical and laboratory elements for the diagnosis of subacute thyroiditis.

From an endocrinologist point of view you have done everythink is necessary.
The biopsie and the follow up of your thyroid nodule and thyroid function is very important and you have done all what is neccessary.

Hope this information is helpful for you.
If you have other questions, feel free to ask.I will be happy to help.
Take care.

Brief Answer:
No,in your case it is not necessary.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Don't worry about your thyroid nodule.
Thyroid nodules are extremely common. An estimated 4% of the population have a palpable thyroid nodule, and more than 50% have a nodule detectable by ultrasonography.

The follow up interval depends on the nodule ultrasound features.(diameter ,microcalcification, presence of abnormal lymph nodes, substantial growth etc.)

You have a benign nodule and in your case it is necessary to do ultrasounds every 6 months. If the ultrasound discover any suspected charachteristic than it is necessary to repeat the FNA.

Hope this information is helpful.
