Question : Hi, I had a TransEsophageal Echo 48 hours ago. I have had some mild burning sensation and discomfort in the middle part of my chest and upper stomach. The sore throat has gone away. Is this normal after this procedure? I don't believe there was any blood on the probe after it was removed but I am concerned about my esophagus with this burning sensation and mild discomfort.

                                    Brief Answer:
Some time probe mildly erodes the mucosa of esophagus!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Firstly thanks for choosing HCM for your query!
Yes this feeling is normal after TEE.Burning sensation will take 48 to 72 hours to go away.As the probe is inserted into esophagus some times there is mild erosion of mucosa lining the esophagus. However if burning is more you can take Tablet ultracet twice daily(Tramadol plus paracetamol) for a day or two,It will speed up the recovery.
Dont worry the sensation will settle down in 2,3days.
Thanks!

Hi, it's been 5 days and I'm still experiencing burning from the upper part of my stomach to the middle of my esophagus. I also feel like I have a lump in my throat at times, tightness in the middle of my chest, and occasional nausea when lying down. Could the TEE have set off some sort of reflux or GERD?
Thanks
                            Thanks
                                    Brief Answer:
Could be indicative of infection at the site of erosion by TEE probe!
Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
I would suggest you to visit your primary consultant now.
Some times the probe of TEE may cause erosion of the mucosa of esophagus,Tightness, occasional nausea and lump in your mouth can be suggestive of infection.
As it has been already 5 days, I would suggest you to visit your cardiologist.
A few blood tests could be done,If they are normal some anti inflammatory drugs and PPI's may be given by him for few days.
No TEE can cause transient reflux but it can't set off GERD.Normally things should have settled by 3 days.
Thank you!
