Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat And Fever In A Child

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Aug 2016
Question: I have a seven year old with a sore throat, a fever of 100.2 last night and tonight. I don't think he had a fever in between. He woke up fine this morning and has been normal. Last night he didn't eat supper (abnormal for him), and he ate well today. Tonight he has lost his appetite again, which prompted me to check his temp, and it is back. He has a slight loss of energy, but enough to pester siblings. He has pain in his upper left quadrant.

Brief Answer:
Get him evaluated by a pediatrician to rule out streptococcal infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for asking on this platform

I have gone through the detail and would like to get him evaluated by a pediatrician to rule out streptococcal sore throat.
Sore throat is most commonly caused by some viral infection.Second most common cause is streptococcal infection.
While most of the viral sore throat respond to conservative management, antibiotic treatment is needed for streptococcal infection.
Strep infection can be detected by streptozyme test or throat swab.Clinical finding like inflamed and enlarged tonsils with painful neck nodes gives a clue towards strep infection.
Antipyretic like paracetamol with warm saline gargle, cough lozenges which soothen the throat and cough syrup containing anti allergic, mucolytic with bronchodilator may be needed to relieve the symptoms.
Decrease in appetite is common during any kind of febrile illness and it improves as the illness subsides.

I hope this helps.
