Question: Im 56 y.o, smoker, infrequent drinker. For the last several weeks I have noticed a slight sore throat on my right side of the back of my throat. I noticed the soreness more in the morning than during the day unless I smoked, then it was a little noticeable. I have now quit smoking but have noticed a small white spot on the right side of the back of my throat near my tonsil. Again, I dont notice the soreness during the day and have no earache. Cerned about throat cancer.

Brief Answer:
Will need a careful examination

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

A small white spot on the back of throat, especially associated with soreness persisting for several weeks raises suspicion for cancer. But there are other possibilities as well, like follicular pharyngitis (a type of infection), precancerous changes, etc. The first possibility would be a chronic infection of throat, not uncommon in smokers.

I would recommend a thorough evaluation of the area by ENT specialist. If suspicious, a scraping, swab or biopsy may be required for definitive diagnosis.

Hope this helps.
Regards
