Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat, Hoarse Voice And Sneezing

Posted on Tue, 24 Mar 2015
Question: I have been experiencing sore throat, hoarse voice or losing voice, sneezing, coughing, drainage down back of the throat and stuffy nose. I have been to my doctor and he put me on amoxillan, but it hasn't really helped very much. When I see him, he doesn't even look in my throat - just prescribes antibiotics. What could this be?

Brief Answer:
allergic rhinitis

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

If the symptoms are persisting then there is likely an allergic component to it.

Allergic rhinitis (allergies involving the nasal passages) and allergic sinusitis (involving sinus passages) are the most common cause of sneezing, coughing, post nasal drip and intermittent hoarseness.

The drip causes the cough and hoarseness. Actually post nasal drip is one of the most common causes of persistent cough.

You may want to consider the use of a topical steroid nasal spray such as flonasa, rhinocort, nasonex or nasocort. One of these would help with the nasal symptoms.

Should be combined with a oral antihistamine and decongestant which would be available over the counter.
Eg zyrtec d, allegra d, claritine d, benadryl with decongestant

If there is a particular stimulus to your symptoms then can also try to reduce exposure to it.
I have a patient whose post nasal drip is caused by use of bananas which was only found after allergy testing.

In others it may be other foods/drinks, dust, pollen, animal dander

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

I already use fexofenadine (over the counter) I have tried flonasa years ago with no results - are the others that you mentioned (Rhinocort, Nasonex nasocort) over the counter or do they need to be prescribed? The only thing that has changed in my household since this started is a friend is staying with me for a few months. I have cats, but have never tested alergic to them. I was tested years ago (the pin picks on the back) and it didn't show that animal dander was a problem. It just showed dusts, allergens, mold etc. My allergies are always better in the summer when I turn on the air conditioning. I am in a band and sing, so this is really affecting my ability to sing. (this is a part-time job, thank god!) My throat seems less sore when I don't smoke, but this just hasn't gone away. The vapor e-cig I use actually seems to sooth it. (the vapor is water vapor) I have a humidifier on at home and that helps somewhat.

Brief Answer:
nasocort is over the counter

Detailed Answer:
HI

Nasocort is over the counter, the others may or may be available over the counter.

The sprays unfortunately do not work immediately but may take a few days to a week for an effect.

Another option would be singulair.

If there is increased exposure to dust and mold then this may be an issue. The use of the special pillow and bed covers as well as reducing dust in any other house areas may help.

Please feel free to ask any thing else
