Suggest Treatment For Soreness In Throat After Swallowing Food

Question: I was eating my lunch and took a bite of a piece of pork chop that may have been too big for me. I chewed it but I think I swallowed too soon. It felt funny going down. I did not choke or cough from it. And, I can breathe fine.

I drank a few glasses of water and had a cookie in the meantime. It has been about 45 minutes. It feels a little sore. Could I still choke on it? Or would it have gone down?

The soreness in the throat could be due to the trauma caused by the pork piece on the walls of the pharynx while swallowing.

Do not worry! The inflammation will heal soon. Drink plenty of warm water. You will not choke as the meat piece would have already passed down into the food pipe.

how long does it usually take for it to pass down the food pipe - for future reference in case this happens again and I get nervous?

It takes few seconds for the food to pass down into the stomach from the oral cavity. Do not worry! It is very unusual for an healthy adult to choke unless there is any neurological cause.
