Suggest Treatment For Stiffness In The Joints And Hand Tremors

default
Posted on Wed, 17 May 2017
Question: My father is 82 years old and developed stiffness in his joint last yr and a slight tremor in his right hand. The neurologist concluded he had parkinson's disease and is currently having half tablet of syndopa 110 mg 4 times a day and rasalect 0.5 twice a day since july 2016. Recently in feb 2017 he had a fall and fractured his femur. He is now recuperating at home after surgery but recently he has been experiencing excessive sweating and cold hands every evening and night which becomes better after a few hrs. The GP suspected it is a side effect of one of these meds. Is it possible to wean him off syndopa and rasalect slowlym if so what dose to give. We are unable to take him to a doctor at this time due to his fracture.please advise.

Brief Answer:
Off state

Detailed Answer:
Hi there

Thanks for the query

This is unlikely the side effect of any of these medication. It is usually seen during 'off state' during the treatment phase of Parkinsonism. The Syndopa needs dose adjustment which is a complicated process and needs various investigations first. Usually patients with such symptoms are also prescribed anticholinergic medication like Benztropine which blocks the sweat gland secretions.

Before that, please do get his blood sugar tested to rule out hypoglycaemia which can cause this problem. Also he needs to be treated for hyperthyroidism before starting any therapy.

I hope I have answered your query.
