Question: Hi. My three-year-old son has what looks like a splotch of blood or a popped blood vessel on the white of his right eye. He is not experiencing any pain. He did mention that a child pushed him into woodchips at school today and that he rubbed his eyes vigorously as a result (which could have caused the red mark). Is this cause for concern?

Brief Answer:
It is subconjunctival hemorrhage. No need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have checked the attached image. What you report is actually called subconjunctival hemorrhage. It is harmless and would be there for 7-10 days and then resolve on its own. It is not a cause of concern. Nothing needs to be done about it.

If there is itchiness or some other difficulty in the eyes, or if there is difficulty in vision, you may get a ophthmological checkup done. However, I doubt whether it would be required.
