Question: My eye is extremely bloodshot and painful. I put a reading contact in about 1 pm and as my eye discomfort grew, I removed it about 3 pm. The eye has grown more painful in the over the last 6 hours. When I have put in redness relief drops my eye burns in the inner quadrant.

Brief Answer:
Check your blood pressure

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for the question.

Do you have high blood pressure? DId you measure it after the red eye? Please do it and let me know. Do you have had angina earlier? Are you diabetic?

Subconjunctival hemorrhage is common and noted in elderly because of rupture of the smallest capillary vessels in the conjunctiva, oozing the blood into the conjunctival sac. This gives the blood shot appearance. However it should not be painful. Since you had put the contact lens it irritated and inflammed giving the pain. You should not worry unless your blood pressures are over 180 mm Hg, in such a case you should see at ER. The blood will be absorbed on its own and does not need treatment.

I suggest you to take Tab ACETAMINOPHEN one dose. You can put lubricating drops available over the counter. Cover the eye and do not get out till the redness starts subsiding.
