Suggest Treatment For Swelling And Hard Lump On Lower Leg

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: I brought my son to the doctor for lower leg swelling and a lump. x ray was negative and ultrasound showed hematoma. The ultrasound tech thought maybe it was a bug bite. I don't recall any injury. Swelling has gone down but he still has a small hard lump on his shin. Should I be concerned. Can bug bites leave a hard lump?

Hi,

I noticed it about a week and a half ago. He is totally healthy otherwise and njy on medications. The lump is mid shin. I don't recall any bruising. Initially it was uncomfortable to the touch. It no longer bothers him.

Brief Answer:
Hematoma with swelling in the mid shin of the leg

Detailed Answer:
Final Opinion-Hematoma with swelling in the mid shin of the leg

HI,Dear Thanks for the updates on your query.
On reviewing the facts of the query with your update reply, the status of your lump is as follows-
-That the lump which your son has on mid-shin area of his leg,is since last 10 days-
-There is no history of other health problem of any kind and no drugs of any kind,
-The lump was hurting to touch and currently doesn't bother him at all,
-X-ray is negative for any bony injury
-But the Ultrasound study shows hematoma
In this background you feel small hard lump on the shin.

Cause of the lump in the leg-
In the above background and with very limited information from query,
This lump seems to be either-
-a resolving hematoma with bony contusion of the mid shin of the leg, which has caused cellulitis with the hard lump with hematoma on the Ultrasound.

- or it could be bug bite with ? hematoma. But as its very rare to get heamtoma ,Chances of that lump being caused are very less

Treatment Plan and Caution-Advised

-This hard lump should resolve in next 4-5 weeks time, till the time you take up anti-inflammatory gel (like Voltaren gel)
and Thrombophobe oint locally, from your doctor, if need be.
But if it does not get relieved, then you should consult ER Surgeon for that problem.
-If you find any other complaint or growth of this lump I would advise you to consult ER Surgeon, who would rule out other causes of such a lump which is not growing otherwise and causing worry for your son.

-Dear,there are many other causes and possibilities which need to be investigated and ruled out,for which I would advise to consult ER Surgeon, who would appropriate precautions and would help you out by proper care.
-In such a situation I would advise you to consult Me by a direct question and follow up query in this regard, at any time in near future.

Impression-
-You should not be CONCERNED about this at this stage.
-Bug bite usually does cause swelling but very rarely hematoma.
-Hematoma and lump on the leg -indicates that your son had some hit by a blunt object on the shin-bone, and this was un-noticed from him.

I hope this reply would have relieved your concerns for health problem of your son.

Welcome for any further in this regard to ME.
If you don't have any further query in this regard,Don't forget to hit thanks and write your excellent review comments, which would improve my rating to new needy visitors to HCM.

Wishing fast recovery for your son.
Have a good day.
