Question : What could be causing the back of my knee to ache before bedtime last night and continue all through the night and still continue? Pain is achy and seems to travel slightly upward from the left knee but more so down toward the ankle. On a 1 to 10 scale I would describe as an 8 to 9 last night. I took two tylenol so I could sleep. It reduced the pain. Additionally both calves (left worse) fill like the circulation might be cut off as if a rubber band was around the knee or calf. However, the sensation is not quite as bad at this moment as it was last night.

Brief Answer:
It can be a backer cyst or knee synovitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case. Only few conditions can cause such pain on the back of knee. One of them is knee synovitis. In this condition there is swelling and pain in knee and this is due to over work or sudden twisting of knee. It can happen due to jogging or running also.
Other cause can be a backer cyst in the back part of the knee. I have following suggestions for you.
1.ice application
2.Get x ray of the knee joint to make sure that you are not having nay knee arthritis or reduction in joint gap.
3.avoid running or brisk walking. Rather you can walk for more distance or time.
4.volitran gel local application.
5.Simvastatin can cause thigh and calf pain. Discuss with your doctor if you can avoid this.
6.physiotherapy is also helpful. You can take tyenol or etoricoxib if pain is severe.
7.Steroid injection can be given in knee joint. Avoid smoking if you do.
I hope these steps will be helpful for you.Let me know if their is any other followup questions.
thanks
