Posted on Wed, 3 Jun 2015
Question: The center of my collar bone next to my throat hurts REALLY bad to touch and is swollen. It hurts to lift my left shoulder or turn my head. It started a few days ago and now nothing I take or use relieves the pain. What do you think is causing this. Thanks in advance for your response. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Mostly suggestive of injury or infections

Hello Sir/madam,
Thanks for writing in to us at hcm.

This is Dr.Riyanka and I am glad to be helping you with your query.

There can be various causes leading to the swelling of the collar bone (Clavicle) like:

1. Fracture of the collar bone due to a accidental fall or car injury or a blow on
the chest.
2. Infections
3. Soft tissue/Muscle injury near the collar bone.
4. Viral infections leading to inflammed and enlarged lymphnodes near the
clavicle.

Did you hurt yourself?

Since you have difficulty to lift shoulder or turn head and the pain is not getting relieved with pain killers, it suggests an injury of the collar bone. I will suggest you consult an orthopaedician for an X-Ray of the collar bone to know the cause of swelling.

Hope this answers your query. Don't worry .
