Suggest Treatment For Swelling And Rashes On The Face After Taking Lorazepam

default
Posted on Mon, 19 Dec 2016
Question: I have been having dental work done and have been prescribed 2 mg of lorazapan foe anxiety. Four or five days later I have broken out in a severe facial rail with swelling in the cheeks. My GP and dentist do not think it is the lorazepam, it's too far out for a reaction, my life is very routine and I cannot find another cause. I have taken predisone and rash eventually goes away. I've had three dental appointments in November and rash has reappeared just on the face. I am femal,84 years old. Your thoughts? Please. Could it be a lorazapan reaction?

Brief Answer:
Please check for allergies to equipments used during the procedure

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.

I believe that something that is used during the dental procedures, like a glove (that your dentist wears) could be causing an allergic reaction.

# do you have any other medical issues or take any medications?
# is the rash limited only to your cheeks? Does your tongue or inner cheek swell?
# what dental procedures are you getting done?
# do they give you any anesthetic? Like a dental spray?
# do you take any medications after the procedure?

Lorazepam can result in an allergic reaction but will appear sooner and is usually seen all over the body, not just face.

As it had appeared after each dental procedure and is limited to the face, the equipments used during the procedure need to be checked out.
If you are getting fillings, allergy to those can cause a facial rash as well.
The anesthetic, if used must also be ruled out as the cause.

Next time, ask you dentist to check for specific causes by testing on your inner arm. Keep a glove on one arm, spray a little local anesthetic on the other and see for any reactions (upto 2days).

Sometimes reactions occur only when exposed to the mucosa and not the skin.

Please try to check as mentioned above. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health.

Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
