Question : I had a dislocated knee 10 weeks ago. I am about 4 weeks into physical therapy now and finally starting to walk normally again. I had a particularly long day at work and walked a mile and now I am getting painless swelling around the ankle. Any idea why something like this could happen.

Brief Answer:
Walking and long day's work is the cause.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr XXXX,

Welcome to healthcaremagic.com

I understand your concern.

In my opinion, walking a mile after almost 4 weeks of relative inactivity and a long day at work has caused the swelling around the ankle, this however is not very significant and will subside over time as you become increasingly XXXXXXX and active.

If you have no other symptoms such as redness, pain in and around the ankle, the you have nothing to worry.

Prolonged standing results in stasis of blood in the legs, and since you were not active for about 4 weeks, the muscles that help push the blood up (calf muscles 0 which are also called peripheral heart), would become weak because of not using them as before, and as you resume activity, the blood flow increases in the area, this together causes some mild edema (accumulation of fluid in the lose connective tissue under the skin).

This will improve without any intervention. When you sleep, the fluid that got accumulated will be absorbed back into the blood, and over the next few days, as your calf muscles regain their original strength, you will not develop this edema anymore.

I hope this answers your question, please feel free to write back to me if you have additional concerns.

Wishing you good health.

Best regards.
