Posted on Wed, 9 Jul 2014
Question: Hello. We are on our honeymoon in the Maldives. After a 10 hour and a 7 hour flight 2.5 days ago both of my feet and ankles were very swollen. The swelling went away but my big toe has been numb and hasnt stopped. It is not tingling or swollen or red, its just numb. My calf recently started aching but that could be from a massage yesterday. I am on nuva ring birth control and know the blood clot warnings. Ive taken ibrofen. We are scheduled to go scuba diving tomorrow. What are your thoughts?

Brief answer....should not be taken lightly
Detailed answer.....
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
Foot and leg swelling are very common after a long plane ride and is harmless in general.
It occurs due to pronged inactivity resulting in pooling of blood in lower extremities.
Although your swelling is gone but since your pain in calf is still there and there is numbness in toe coupled with the fact that you are on NUVARING,makes it a little dangerous and suspect for deep vein thrombosis.
I would suggest you to consult a doctor and get investigated for it.
I know it XXXXXXX your honeymoon excitement, but it can not be taken lightly because if it is DVT,then one can have dangerous consequence of pulmonary embolism.
Go to ER, get yourself cleared and then enjoy your honeymoon subsequently with full blast.
I hope it helps, however you may revert to me for any  further query.
Best of luck
Thanks

Thank you Dr. The slight ache in calf was not there the whole time. It only came last night, and it was gone when i woke up. Do you still think the numbness in toe is an issue? That is the only issue remaining.Could it be a nerve issue?

Hello,
The numb toe may or may not be related to deep vein thrombosis, but the fact remains that person may be without symptoms inspite of having DVT.
Very frankly speaking ,DVT can not be ruled out unless and until you get investigated.
I know you are on honeymoon but still it is better to be safe rather than feel sorry later on.
Thanks

Thank you Dr. I went and received medical attention today as you advised. While the doctor confirmed the notion of never fully being able to rule out DVT, he said that no signs point to it. His prognosis was that it is most likely due to a compressed nerve and dehydration. He gave me a long list of pills to take over the next week that I want to confirm with you that it is ok to take all together for a 100 pound girl of 28 years in age with no prior medical allergies. He gave me 10 tablets of Neurobion Forte to take once per day for B Vitamins, 5 tablets (300mg) of Gaba Pentene to take once per day for numbness, 10 capsules of Normabrain(400mg) to take twice per day for increase of oxygenation, 6 tablets of Wysolone(20mg) to take twice per day for anti-inflamation, 6 tablets of Chymoral Forte to take 3 times per day for swelling, and two packs of O.R.S. (Peditral) to mix into a liter of water and drink twice per day for dehydration. He also wanted to give me a cortizone shot for precautionary purposes, but I declined this since we are in a foreign country (the Maldives) and did not want to receive injections that were not a necessity. He did not charge for any of the medications since we are at a 5-star resort named Gili Lankanfushi; so I am not suspicious of him prescribing as much as he can for the money. However, I am concerned about the amount of medication he wants me to take, as I have never experienced back in the U.S. being prescribed so much at once. I am also on the NuvaRing as explained earlier, and I take Immitrex for migraines when needed (haven't taken one within the last week). I also took Advil the past two days to try to help with my issues. I made this doctor aware of all of these other medications that I have been taking. So my big question is whether it is safe for me to take all of these medications at once, and are there any major side effects I should look out for? Any other thoughts?

Hello,
in my opinion ,you can avoid wysolone.
Rest of the medicines can be taken.
Take Gabapantene in night as it can cause drowsiness.
Thanks
