Posted on Mon, 26 Oct 2015
Question: i have swelling in my right ear canal. It seems to be sore between my upper ear and my face. The swelling inside the ear has made hearing difficult with that ear. Do I need antibacterial drops or do I need something else?

Brief Answer:
otitis externa

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You have swelling in the ear and face which may be due to otitis externa or swimmer's ear. If you have discharge from the ear canal then it is swimmer's ear. the treatment would be 2-3 drops of vinegar in the ear. This helps change the pH of the ear canal and inhibit growth of the bacteria causing the infection.

If you do not have any discharge from the ear then you have infection in the face. Now that will require oral antibiotics and you will need to see a medical provider to get that medication

Is there any particular type of vinegar I should try? I have discharge that is causing interrupted hearing at times. The inside of my ear is clogged and swollen enough to block hearing in that ear.

Are there other treatments other than antibiotics?

You can use any vinegar. Whatever you have in your house with work. It is the acetic acid in the vinegar that will treat the infection.

Brief Answer:
Use vineger until ear is better

Detailed Answer:
You should use the vinegar until your ear is better. Also you need to make sure you do not get any more water in your ear as it will perpetuate the infection
