Suggest Treatment For Swelling In The Upper Lip

Question: HI! Since Saturday AM, I have been waking up every morning with a swollen upper lip. It seems to go down during the day. I starting to take Claritin two days ago and doesn't seem to be doing much since I am still waking up with the swollen upper lip. Additionally they feel a bit dry and cracking since I was told not to use anything on them other than Vaseline. Very bizzare- nothing has changed in my diet...why would it happen overnight while I am sleeping?

Brief Answer:
Could be due to some allergic reaction.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting Healthcaremagic.
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.

The extent of your upper lip swelling indicates a moderate to severe allergic reaction to something your mouth came in contact just a few hours before you went to sleep or during the sleep. It could be some food stuffs , medicines, cosmetic products or even insect bite. Dental appliances - such as braces, can cause temporary swelling in the mouth and lips.
First of all you have to find out what causing this severe allergic eruption. Search for any drug/food allergy. Fumigate your bedroom and bed linen to clear up any insect infestation.
You can try antihistamines like cetrezine or pheneramine to relieve allergic edema. If no improvement is shown despite these you might require oral corticosteroids. Apply an ice pack to your lips several times to reduce the size of swelling and discomfort.
If the symptoms persist despite all these we have to rule out conditions like angioedema, chelitis etc.
