Question : My wife has been hit by a bicycle while crossing the road. Her thumb of left foot got bent. X-Ray says "Chip fracture seen in base of distal phalanx left grate Toe". Their is swelling in the toe. I am putting her toe in ice pack every two hours. Pain has reduced since yesterday. Do you suggest any other medication?

I am attaching her X-Ray report and diagnosis.

Brief Answer:
She needs strapping

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have seen her reports and I think only ice is not not sufficient for her. I have following suggestion to my patients with similar fracture.
1. She need strapping her toe with a bandage. It should be applied by a orthopaedic surgeon.
2. A weight bearing plaster is better, so that she can put weight on affected side. She should not walk for long time .
3. Tablet Brufen for pain can be given.
4. Calcium supplementation also helps in faster healing.
5. When she is resting, keep her foot over pillow.
I hope these steps will help you. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
thanks.
