                                            Put ice, be under observation
Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Welcome to HCM.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.
First of all, head injury is always a serious issue. You have suffered a trauma to back of head leading to a 3inch swelling which is probably an external hematoma. Putting ice is a very apt move, keep this going. Apply ice locally 4-5times a day. Look for features like nausea or vomiting, headache, unconsciousness, convulsions etc. If any of these occurs, you need to see a doctor immediately.
However, considering your age, a CT scan brain can be done to rule out internal hemorrhage.
Also, take mild pain killers if there is excessive pain.
Keep pulse, blood pressure checked at regular interval.
Avoid heavy work, straining etc for few days.
You can consult your doctor about the above advice and get the drugs prescribed.
Hope i have answered your question.

Ice compression and observation is the mainstay
Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
I believe it is a soft swelling. So you are right, it should not be very painful. Just keep applying ice.
Though it looks stable now, keep checking for danger signs. And see a doctor immediately if you feel worse.
Wish you good health.
