Question: the left side cheek just below middle of ear almost next to the lobe to the beginning of the jaw line swells from time to time...especially when I eat something...so for awhile I was thinking I grew a minor allergy to foods I ate my whole life. ...but doesn't always swell with the same food...and there are times I eat the same food as I was when the swelling appeared and there is no swelling...what can be causing this to happen

Brief Answer:
It is stone in salivary duct from Parotid gland.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thank you for your query through Health care magic.
I have gone through your query & understand your concern.
* Your complaints suggest , you have problem with salivary duct from Parotid salivary gland that is situated exactly where your problem lies. ( in front of ear lobe to lower jaw ) .The saliva reaches mouth through salivary duct,& helps in -chewing food/ forming a bolus/ digestion of starch n food.
* You seem to have obstruction in passage of saliva.. in form of a calculus/ stone in salivary duct. The swelling is due blockage of salivary duct, that carries saliva secreted in gland & takes saliva to mouth cavity , by salivary stone.Being blocked, the saliva secreted can not be drained in oral cavity & collects in the gland itself to increase it's size.
* Sight , thought or chewing of food forms stimulus for the secretion of saliva.

- The symptoms are swelling of gland after chewing food , to disappear later on. The size of swelling varies from time to time.some times gland may get painful & infected.
** So Please don't worry, your problem is stone in the salivary duct of the Parotid gland, which can be treated well with help of a facial surgeon.
I hope the answer was both informative & useful to you. Any follow up query is welcome.
